How Does Fingerprint Recognition Work?

The inside of our fingers has been created in a unique way in accordance with human biometrics. It is used as the most reliable encryption method, since the same or similar biometrics will not occur in any person. The indentations and protrusions at the tip of our finger are similar to a biometric map. Fingerprint reading devices measure the distance of these indentations and protrusions on our fingers to each other and create an encryption algorithm by detecting the distance of points found on our fingerprint to each other. When our fingerprint is re-read to the fingerprint reading device, the matching process is performed by looking at the records taken to the encryption algorithm inside the device, and the fingerprint recognition process is completed.

Fingerprint systems are of 3 types;

Optical fingerprint reading: in an optical fingerprint system, it is a system obtained by taking a digital image of the fingerprint with the help of light. In this system, the sensor is located on a glass-covered screen and the fingerprint is converted to a numerical value by the reflection of light in. A dirty or stained fingerprint or stains around the sensor can cause the problem of not reading the fingerprint. The main advantage of this system is that it is not exposed to failures caused by electrostatic discharges occurring in capacitive sensors.

Ultrasonic fingerprint reading: in this system, the fingerprint reading process is performed by penetrating the epidermal area of the skin with the help of high sound waves, not superficial as in optical sensors. In this way, even if the fingerprint is dirty, it affects the reading quality of the device to a minimum.

Capacitive fingerprint reading: capacitive sensors have two rows of sensor arrays inside the device. During the reading process, the dermal section of the finger acts as a conductive, and the epidermal section acts as an insulating area, and a digital image of the fingerprint is obtained according to the capacity value generated during touch. There are two different methods, active and capacitive.

In the active capacity method, small voltages are given to the finger surface and gaps are calculated according to the amount of electricity in the intervals within the finger. In the passive capacity method, the device makes measurements in the dermal section of the finger and gets a digital image of the fingerprint according to the capacity changes caused by gaps in this area.

What are the advantages of fingerprint systems?
